African players in Europe: Marmoush torments Newcastle again

Omar Marmoush scored twice as Manchester City triumphed 3-1 away to Newcastle United at the weekend in the FA Cup -- the second time this season he has bagged a cup brace against the Magpies.

Text size:

The 27-year-old Egyptian also netted twice in a League Cup semi-final second leg victory over Newcastle last month.

Mohamed Salah completed a profitable weekend for Egyptian stars by scoring the second goal as Liverpool won 3-1 at Wolverhampton Wanderers in another fifth-round tie.

AFP Sport highlights African headline-makers in the FA Cup and major European leagues:

ENGLAND

OMAR MARMOUSH (Manchester City)

City trailed to Harvey Barnes' first-half goal but Savinho equalised just before half-time. That set the stage for Marmoush, deputising for injured Erling Haaland, to tap in Matheus Nunes' cross after 47 minutes and then convert another Nunes delivery in the 65th minute. The 27-year-old now has six goals for City this season as they try to win the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup.

MOHAMED SALAH (Liverpool)

Egypt's captain scored his ninth goal this season in the Reds' win at Wolves. Salah has endured a disappointing season, but has made a habit of netting against bottom-of-the-table Wolves. The 33-year-old scored in Liverpool's shock 2-1 defeat at Molineux on March 3 and was on target again in the FA Cup tie three days later, slotting home from Andrew Robertson's cross in the 53rd minute.

SPAIN

AKOR ADAMS (Sevilla)

Nigeria international Adams continued his strong form in 2026 by opening the scoring in Sevilla's 1-1 draw against Rayo Vallecano. Adams nodded home from close range in the 13th minute. The striker, who also netted against the same opponents for his first goal for the club last September, has scored four goals in his last eight matches.

GERMANY

SERHOU GUIRASSY (Borussia Dortmund)

Guirassy kept up his recent scoring form, scuffing in from close range to break the deadlock in a 2-1 Bundesliga win at Cologne. With 16 minutes gone, the Guinea international latched onto Maximilian Beier's header to poke home after Cologne failed to fully clear a corner. After a long dry spell, Guirassy has six goals in his last six league games and 12 this season.

YAN DIOMANDE (RB Leipzig)

Diomande scored for the third time in four matches in Leipzig's crucial 2-1 home win over Augsburg. With Leipzig trailing, the Ivorian teenager beat Augsburg's Keven Schlotterbeck to the ball and held off the advancing defence to calmly slot home the equaliser. The 19-year-old, who was playing in the fourth tier of US soccer just 18 months ago, has 10 goals and six assists in the league this season.

NICOLAS JACKSON (Bayern Munich)

With Harry Kane missing a Bayern Munich match for the first time this season, back-up striker Jackson stepped up, scoring a goal and creating another in a 4-1 home win over Borussia Moenchengladbach. With Bayern 2-0 up early in the second half, Jackson charged into the penalty area and won a spot kick when Gladbach's Rocco Reitz, who saw a red card for the incident, brought down the Senegal international in the box. Jackson had a goal of his own -- his first in the league since November -- late in the match when he ran onto a Lennart Karl pass and tapped in from close range.
