Berliner Boersenzeitung - Russell holds off Verstappen to claim imperious victory in Baku

The 28-year-old Briton came home just 0.196 seconds ahead of the four-time champion with his Red Bull team-mate Isack Hadjar third on his return after a broken wrist in a race punctuated by two safety cars.

It was Russell's first win on the fast, challenging streets of Baku, his first since the Austrian Grand Prix in June,and the eighth of his career. It trimmed team-mate Kimi Antonelli's lead in the drivers' championship to 66 points.

Antonelli finished fifth behind Ferrari's Charles Leclerc after slicing through the field from 16th on the grid. Seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton was sixth in the second Ferrari.

"It's amazing to be back on the top step so I want to say a big thank you to the team for helping me through a tough moment," said Russell.

"The first half of the race felt pretty plain sailing, getting the gap, but after the safety car I saw Max behind me and I knew it wasn't going to be easy.

"When the yellow flag came out, I lifted off the power and when I came back I had no turbo and Max nearly got me on the line."

Verstappen was philosophical.

"We had a good race," he said. "In the final lap, George lost a bit of boost so that's why I caught up quite a bit. It got close, but it wasn't enough."

Hadjar drove in pain.

"It's been a very long six weeks since I injured myself, but it felt like the right moment to come back. I felt strong and this is my first proper podium finish on pure pace so I am delighted."

Racing Bulls' rookie Arvid Lindblad was seventh, Esteban Ocon eighth ahead of his Haas team-mate Oliver Bearman and Williams' Carlos Sainz.

Russell made a near-perfect start from his 12th pole position to draw clear while, behind him, Oscar Piastri took advantage of a slow-starting Leclerc to take second. Antonelli dropped from 16th to 17th.

Verstappen also enjoyed the opening lap and passed both Alpines before powering past Hamilton, Norris, Leclerc and finally team-mate Hadjar to rise to third.

The Dutchman was grumbling about his tyres, but Russell on the same medium compound was already five seconds ahead of Piastri on softs.

By mid-distance, Russell led by 10 seconds, but grazed the wall at Turn 15.

- 'Oh my God! Oh my God!' -

Team-mate Antonelli was up to ninth as the Red Bulls scrapped for third, making life easy for Piastri in second.

The processional action ended on lap 30 when Williams' Alex Albon crashed at Turn Five, triggering a Safety Car deployment during which the leaders all pitted.

After five laps, the race resumed with the Dutchman passing Piastri at Turn One .

Behind him Franco Colapinto lunged up the inside but ran out of space entering the next corner. He locked up and went sideways pushing Alpine team-mate Pierre Gasly into Lando Norris in a McLaren. The three went off the track in a synchronised slide.

Both drivers for the struggling French team were in position for top-10 finishes.

"Oh my God! Oh my God! I don't believe it," said Gasly on team radio adding a swear word. "So many points gone."

A second safety car came out for three laps. After the restart Piastri locked-up,dropping to 14th and gifting Hadjar third.

Antonelli passed Hamilton with 10 laps to go to take fifth.
